Mary Hedges

Mary Minier Hedges, currently from Illinois, originally from Michigan, passed away on January 3, 2025 at her home with family by her side. Mary had just celebrated her 89th birthday, living the longest in her family. She was proud of how well she kept herself, being active with both mind and body. When asked how she was each day she would always say "lovely as usual" and she really meant it! Mary was born on January 2, 1936 to Margaret "Peg" and Howard Minier in Battle Creek Michigan. She lived in Battle Creek, Coldwater, and Ann Arbor, Michigan and then traveled to Connecticut and Illinois, to South Carolina, and finally back to Illinois. She enjoyed traveling, meeting people, trying new things, and then coming home to family and friends. Mary was active in her communities and tried her best to leave a positive impression wherever she went. She loved traveling to Michigan football games and while living in South Carolina, she made pillows for the men's Clemson basketball team to travel with and would bring over fresh baked cookies, her legacy became known as the "cookie lady". Mary was married to Ted Lou with whom she had two children Matt Lou and Betsy Thomas married to Kevin Thomas, children Brittany and Brett. When Ted and Mary divorced, she remarried to the late Herbert Hedges and she was happy to welcome his children HL and Karen Suydam married to Brad Suydam, children Taylor (Rmneet) and Savanna (Charlie). She also leaves behind her wonderful brother John Minier and wife Verna. She loved having the kids and grandkids visit her, showing them off was one of her favorite things to do. Mary liked to share little nuggets of wisdom and proper manners with the kids and as they grew older, she was able to share one of her favorites, when she would burp, she would say "not bad manners, just good beer". Although the process of life's conclusion is often painful and challenging, Mary never complained and went through this journey with grace and peace. She lived each day as it came and was happy to be alive. Mary will be missed by all. She was and will always be a shining light to her friends and family. Safe travels, we love you. Visitation will be held at Bachman Hebble Funeral Service on Tuesday, January 14, 2025 from 10:00-11:00 AM with a procession to follow to Memorial Park Cemetery for a committal service in their chapel at 11:30 AM.
