Virginia McDermitt

Virginia A. McDermitt (née McGurk), 88, of Lake Villa, IL, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, July 18, 2023 at her home with her family. She was born on April 22, 1935, in Pittsburgh, PA, the oldest daughter of the late George McGurk, Sr. and Virginia (Schweinsberg) McGurk. Ginny, as she was known by family and friends, was raised on her dad's farm in Murrysville, PA and attended Franklin Regional High School. As an adult, she worked in Wilkinsburg and then moved to Chicago where she worked at Washington National and Moody Bible Institute. She also obtained her Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification. Upon having a family, she cleaned many people’s homes as a way to stay home with her children. Before settling in Lake Villa in 1972, she had lived in Evanston and Bensenville, IL. She also served in her church’s nursery for many, many years and made meals for the meals ministry. She enjoyed reading, writing letters, spending time with family, and having daily conversations with her dear sisters and friends. She had a strong faith and abiding love for the Lord and loved to be a giver. She will be deeply missed and remembered by her husband, James (Red) McDermitt, whom she wed on September 18, 1965, and her children, Caroline (Tom) Bongiorno, Connie McDermitt, Ernest McDermitt, Eric McDermitt, and Ellen McDermitt and grandchildren, Alia and Tommy Bongiorno; siblings, Eleanor (late William) Ridgeway, Helen (late James) LaSitis, Miriam (late Richard) Dietz, Nancy (late Lewis and late John) Ozog, George (Beverly) McGurk, Jr., Charles (Barb) McGurk and LuAnn (late William) Ladd, as well as numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, in-laws, and other family members and friends. Also remaining to cherish her memory are dear friends Marge Kaltenbach, Elaine Stevens, David Stevens, Janann Gardner, Charlene Hendrickson, and Judy Hensel, among many others. She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Virginia McGurk and sisters Elizabeth (late Larry Amaral and late Douglas Black) Amaral and Janet (late Steve) Black. A funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 25, 2023 at Ringa Funeral Home, 122 S. Milwaukee Ave, Lake Villa, IL. Visitation will be from 12:00 p.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home on Tuesday. Private burial will take place on Wednesday, July 26, 2023 at Warren Cemetery, Gurnee, IL.
