Jennie Kelly

Jennie Lucy Kelly passed away peacefully on May 29, 2014 at the age of 93. She was born in Tickfaw, Louisiana on October 3, 1920 to the late James and Frances Carderella. Jennie was the oldest of their seven children. She resided in Chicago for most of her adult life before settling in Round Lake Beach to be near her family. Jennie was extremely grateful to her Cedar Villas family with whom she lived for the last 19 years. She was an extremely hard worker and a jack of all trades, owning a Chicago convenience store in the 70’s, and eventually retiring from a factory job at Land O Sweets where she made delicious candy that her grandchildren loved to sample. Jennie had a fierce spirit of independence throughout her life. She loved playing card games with friends, such as Dirty Dog, 31, 500 Rummy, and 9-Hole. She also enjoyed cooking for her family, including her specialties of spaghetti and meatballs, stuffed artichokes, fried chicken, amazing soups, Sicilian fig cookies, and her famous apple slice. Jennie was very craft oriented and enjoyed crocheting and numerous other hobbies. She especially enjoyed sewing and was an excellent seamstress. When her granddaughters were young she enjoyed making their Easter dresses each year, and had the honor of making the dresses for her grandson’s wedding party. Jennie had a wonderful sense of humor with an infectious laugh, often losing her breath in fits of laughter. Jennie loved to travel and no distance was too far. In the last year alone, she traveled to Louisiana, Minnesota, and North Dakota to visit with very special friends and family. Her granddaughters hold fond memories of the special trips they would take in Gram’s car each summer to visit relatives. She was an extraordinary woman who will be remembered as Gram, GG, Aunt Jennie, Miss Jennie, Mrs. Kelly, and Jennie to those that knew her. She is lovingly remembered by her grandchildren: Mark D. (Barbara) Obrochta, Michael D. (Cara) Obrochta, Shawn Kelly, Edwin Kelly, Danielle (Daniel) Burke, Deon Obrochta, and Louis Mazzola; her great-grandchildren: Sean, Colin, Hannah, Valerie, Anastasia, Quentin, Chase Elizabeth, Ethan, Madison, Grace, and Liliana; her son-in-law, Mark W. Obrochta; a son, Gerald; and many friends and extended family. Jennie was preceded in death by her husband, Edwin Kelly; her beloved daughter, Dianna Obrochta; and siblings: Virginia (Rita) Ducoin, Josephine (Joe) Simmons, Joseph (Joe) Carderella, Salvador (Sam) Carderella, Carmelita (Carmie) Reid, and Anthony (Tony) Carderella. Visitation will be June 27, 2014 from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at Prince of Peace Catholic Church: 135 S. Milwaukee Ave. (Route 83), Lake Villa, IL 60046. The funeral mass will begin immediately following visitation at 10:00 a.m. Entombment will be at Ascension Catholic Cemetery in Libertyville, IL immediately following the mass.
